Hi :)

I've just sold my 2 year old 4090 because it was never getting used, I don't play high end PCVR games anymore because I've already played the games in this class that I like until I was bored of them. I replaced it with a Radeon 710m or something like that and now there's an app (not a game) I use on my PC that won't run, it requires an Nvidia 900 series or better to run.

So I'm looking at buying a 900 series or better. I don't want to spend much because I intend to buy a 5090 (if I can afford 1) when they are released if there are new PCVR games worth playing too (that's a big if).

I can get a gtx 970/980 for about £50 which will run my software, however I don't mind going up to around £200 for something better if it's worth it, because that may also give me the option of playing Half Life 2 (again) in VR. I don't know much about Radeon cards but will consider them. I'm fine with buying used. Suggestions much appreciated, best bang per buck suggestions please.

Can't go wrong with a 1080Ti around that price. Saying that they are getting pretty old nowdays and you probably would not need to spend much more on a used 3070/3080 which would be better for VR.
Cheers, I'd only be playing things like hl2 + episodes probably though and similar old games converted to VR....but yes 3070's are going for not much more than £200 (just checked) and would give me more VR gaming options. Why is it with gpu's we often end up spending more than we planned lol! A 3070 would open up many VR games such as the new Metro on PCVR, hmm.

I think the 1080Ti performs well compared to the RTX3050
the 1080ti will trump the 3050 any day. in 10 series terms, the 3050 8gb is equivalent to the 1070, and the 3050 6gb is equivalent to the 1060 6gb.

best bang per buck suggestions please.
if going used then:
the 1080ti (as previously suggested) is the choice here, but getting a bit long in the tooth as well

other choices to think about would be:
2070 super (1080ti equivalent)
2080 (newer than the 1080ti but older than the 20-super series, slightly faster than the 1080ti/2070 super ~10% or so)
2080 super (~15% faster than the 1080ti/2070 super)

if you want to buy new, the radeon 7600 would be the closest equivalent:
for £230 it sits in between the 1080ti/2070 super and the 2080 in performance
but the main advantage is that it is much newer with warranty, and also uses much less power (165w) vs the other cards (215-230w), so runs cooler and doesn't need a beefier psu

the only way i'd consider getting one of the use specimens is if they are available for £150 or so
if they are closer to £200 then i'd rather pony up the £30 and get a new radeon 7600

What CPU do you have?

Even an IGP should be fine for things like HL2.

Ocuk has new RTX 3050 for £154 or RX6600 for £180. One of those would be ideal.
I have an 8 year old i7 7700K in a complete build I bought from OC which is still going strong, use it for multiple hours everyday :)

6700xt might be doable for 200 used maybe, could be a nice choice? Theres a few sold just over 200 on a certain site for used stuff, might get better deal on mm here.

Tho if u want something for hl2 maybe grab something from nvidia for rt cos of hl2 rtx that will come out later i think i read recently. Maybe a 3060ti if 200 or under or something like that?

Hmm a 6700xt which is similar tho maybe less rt performance but has 12gb vram might have been a better choice for same money. Reason i say is 8gb is gona suffer if u want to play something like stalker 2 or other games where 8gb might stutter ingame. But if ur not bothered with new aaa games then it should be ok.

I know the 3070 is a better card i was just trying to say tho probs mucked it up is that at release yeah the 6700xt was a 3060 ti equiv card but i reckon over time with driver maturity it isnt far behind and sometimes might match the 3070, especially in vram high games. Tho the amd card wont beat it in rt but raster i reckon it probs close or equal tho depends on the game and settings etc.

Tbh I'm not going to play the latest AAA games like Stalker 2 on it, I'll keep things like that for if & when I buy a 5000 series GPU, this 3070 will be for VR games but not the very demanding ones.

I think 3070 was about the best you could do for that budget... looked up some benchies more for my own knowledge, but from TPU's 4070 review (picked this for more up to date performance accounting for driver improvements), I find it quite interesting that the 6700xt actually loses ground against the 3060ti as resolution increases!

3060ti isn't present in all tests, which may account for some of that, but the 3070 seems comfortably ahead vs 6700xt in the ones I've looked at.

A 3060ti or 6700XT should be easily doable for under £200 if using the MM, I sold a 3060ti for £215 a year ago.

I've seen 3070's go for around £200 in the past couple of months, a 6800 should be plausible too with a little luck, and with more modern cards you might luck out with warranty that most on here are happy to help out with.

The 3070 will be fine as a stop gap until the next Intel/AMD/nvidia cards come out, though whats with the members market talk with some posters like its easy to pick up cards or get deals.... its not and when something comes up for sale its few and far between.

This is from a quick search from whats sold this year, I did not count the threads that where withdrawn and sold elsewhere though it was less than about 5 threads across all models of GPU's listed below

Thankyou for the breakdown of prices. Looks like I got a good deal then @ £225 for this 3070, it was advertised for £250, I offered £225 which the seller said he'd accept if I could collect which I could because he wasn't far away. @SkeeterUK you do have a point about the VRAM, 1 game I would like to play I read yesterday evening that in some circumstances (particular maps, graphics settings etc) requires 10 GB of VRAM.
