Well my 8800GTX appears to have given up the ghost. Producing no output to the monitor. Anyway, thats besides the point.

I'm way out of step with PC components since I built my rig over 2 years ago, it's being doing just fine. I am obviously going to have to replace the graphics card but I'm going to need some advice/recommentations to do so. Current spec:

Core 2 Duo 6600
3gb Ram
ASUS P5n-32 SLI motherboard

I'm looking for something which is an upgrade (or equivalent if cheap) from an 8800GTX, and am willing to spend 150-200 quid. Have been looking at a 9800GTX and a 260 but I'm no wiser.

Any and all advice welcome!

Thanks.

I chose an XFX ATI 4870 1GB for my new system, appears to provide good peformance at good value.

I would recommend a 4870 in that case or the 260. Which will be more than enough at that res, however if you wanted to go with the new cards 4890 or Nvidia 285, 295 etc for a bit of future proofing, then you could but you will need to oc your processor to get more performance from the graphics card as it is overkill at that res!

Until my p5n-e sli broke my plan was, buy a gtx260 now, and get another for around £60 second hand at the end of the year for SLI if it was needed. Bought the gtx260 and the mobo died shortly thereafter! Got a new mobo but it's not SLI, but the 260 overclocks a bit fairly easily and runs everything I have except Crysis maxed out (will do Crysis Warhead on enthusiast with 4AA 25-30FPS which is playable). I'll get an aftermarket cooler if I can get one for under £30 so I can run it cool AND quiet (it's either or on stock cooler) and it'll last a year unless some massive games come along

Well I have never owned an sli system but I am sure the performance increases at your res would be minimal anyway! Anyway if you go with a 4870/4890 or the 275, you could look into overclocking the cpu, which would give you a better performance increase from the card! Thats presuming your cpu isnt oced already?

not really such a thing as overkill with demanding games, just my opinion.

Yes you are right, but he cant use that overkill because he is running a fairly small resolution! Which bottlenecks the CPU because the graphics card can render such a small screen with ease, so if you oc the cpu the card performance will go up also!
