I'm in the market for a 13" laptop and looking for some recommendations.

Ideally looking to spend around the £400 mark but willing to stretch to £500 if its worth it.

Just after the most bang for buck really. Bonus if it can play wow... :o
Optical drive is not required and the hard drive will be replaced with a OCZ Vertex 2.

Cheers

Hi there

Take a look at the OcUK 13.3" jobs on This week Only and the Toshiba 13.3" units we offer, pretty incredible value for money leaving you with some change. :)

Also an alternative option would be the Acer Timeline we have on TODAY ONLY, its £450, but its only 2kg, so just 250grams heavier than a 13.3" but you get bigger screen, just as long battery life (8hrs) but the spec is incredible, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD and an optical drive yet its only 1" thick.

Seriously check it out, OcUK Homepage in TODAY ONLY section. :)

The Samsung Q330. Its about £500 with an i3 processor, very nice laptop. The OCUK laptops are good for the price, but if you have the extra cash then the Sammy is the way to go.

In-between, you have the Acer 3810TZ, and the Asus UL30A. They won't play WoW. Maybe the Asus 1215N netbook, with dual-core Atom 1.8GHz, Ion2, 7 hours battery, it's £430, and 12''. Their emphasis is on mobility and battery life primarily, not power, but can do basic office stuff noneless.

EDIT : I have a UL30A with a Sammy SSD 128gb. Costs about 1/2 the notebook, but makes so smooth to use.

You're gonna struggle to find anything matching it for under £500 tbh. What you'll be left with are CULV notebooks and home laptops.

Most i3 mobility notebooks are over £500. But that Sammy looks ace.

I can't wait for the Fusion notebooks to come out. Hopefully they'll provide a better alternative than the Optimus / switchable graphics notebooks. Still 12-18 months away!

EDIT : Oh yeah, have a look at the Dell Vostro. Not sure how good it is, but worth a look. I think they do extended batteries for them as well, if you need the juice.

But that Samsung isn't under £500, nearly £600 from what I can see.

Sub £500, 13.3" you can get the Toshiba Satellite Pro L630-134 which has an i3 but only 2gb ram. The Samsung is a better buy, in my opinion but then it's also £60 over budget.
