Hi all,

I am thinking of upgrading my memory.

I currently have 8gb of Patriot Black Mamba 2x4gb of 2400MHz C10 memory, with my Asus Maximus VI Gene and 4770K system.

Occasionally I will play with photos, and sometimes I will play around with video/movie rips, DVD and bluray.

So far 4GB-6GB is a regular amount in use just while browsing a few sights, playing a game and using TS for example, with those odd occasions where I have maxed the CPU cores and memory usually meaning I won't be gaming or watching much. Usually if I try to encode a few files as I do other things.

Would it be worth upgrading to 16gb? The 8gb I have can go into another motherboard I have sitting to build?

Currently cannot decide between Corsair or Kingston 2400MHz DDR2, 8gb or 16gb. Any other recommendations. Black or red colour theme.

I am also buying a G3258 to stick in a Gigabyte Z97X SOC Force, so that build requires memory.

Currently using a Noctua NH-U12S, no issues with memory height using that.

Reliability and consistency are important, had I known the Patriot would not have been as mainstream therefor readily available, I would not have bothered in some ways. I had always bought Corsair in the past and never had an issue adding more years later, previous to that it had been Kingston but thats going back to DDR days.

I plan to keep the 4770k for another couple of years or more. Though I am currently getting by with 8gb, I have another planned G3258 build that needs DDR3, so I feel this is the time to consider my main PC's future memory requirements.

Corsair is nice RAM.

The SOC Force is awesome with RAM so try deeding it something interesting such as 2400Mhz CAS10 or even CAS9 if you can find it.

Well the Patriot Black Mamba is CAS10 at 2400MHz, though CAS9 is possible if the speed is lowered, if I get new memory for the 4770K/Asus Gene system that systems Patriot memory can then be paired with a G3258 within the SOC Force.

I am leaning toward the Corsair Vengeance Pro 2400C11, for the main system, which is the 4770K/Asus Gene VI. paying extra for C10 seems a lot more for little gain.

But now I am still pondering, 8gb or 16gb of Corsair Vengeance Pro in red or Kingston HyperX Savage Red. If I could find a use, something fun to do with it, I would just buy the 32gb kit of HyperX and never have to worry about what the little 4770k system needs ever again.

The 4770K system was my game system, but now looks set to become the main/family/working/project PC too.
As the general purpose Gigabyte/Q9550 family system lost it's motherboard, everything was migrated to this 4770k system. As such there is still quite a lot of media that is going to be getting ripped uncompressed and stored within it.

Performance wise there is very little in it once you are above 1600MHz on an i7/DDR3 platform (some edge case exceptions aside) - so any choice is pretty much as good as any other really aslong as its a reputable brand.

My Kingston HyperX has never missed a beat so gets thumbs up from me.
