Hi all,

I'm planning to get a cycle-to-work hybrid bike for a 2 mile each-way commute bike. Looking for something light and comfortable, that I could also maybe use on cycle paths to go to local villages in the summer.

I'm looking a for a bike costing around £500 (shop price, obviously less after cycle-to-work discounts)

From a bit of reading it seems the boardman bikes have great specs for the cash, but I'm a little concerned they might not be big enough given my size (then largest they do is a 21" frame)

Does anyone have any other suggestions for around £500?

There's lots of cycle to work schemes, by the fact that you're mentioning Boardman am i right in assuming you're with Halfords?

If so, then i can vouch for Boardman as a brand, great bikes.

Another thing to consider is a Cyclocross bike, it's becoming quite popular amongst commuters given its 'hardy road bike' status. It's got more of a road bike geometry than a hybrid but is built strong and can take nobbly 35mm tyres so can go off road too.

It's the NHS cycle-to-work scheme. Still not 100% sure whether they cover thinkgs like online stores etc - have a long list of local shops they allow to do quotes...

I had heard the boardman's were very good value, being an up-and-coming brand and all, was just a little worried it would be too small a frame. I guess the only way to find out will be to go for test rides.

Any particular cyclocross bikes you'd recommend at around £500? Do they allow disc brakes?

I don't know any i'm afraid. There was a boardman one for £500ish that they've unfortunately discontinued this year.

Cyclocross do allow disk brakes yeah, though make sure they're bb5 or, if possible, bb7's. Pretty much the only mechanical disk brakes worth having and hydraulic drop handle bars aren't available yet.

I'd strongly recommend you go for a cyclo cross bike, or an MTB. 'Hybrids' are just the worst features of a road bike combined with the worst features of a mountain bike. A cross bike is a proper hybrid as it's the best of both. A toughened up road bike you can take off road.

Hybrids make me sad. :(
