Hey all,

Quick question...

About to take delivery of my new TomTom One. I live in a 'dodgy' area and don't fancy it getting nicked. I've heard that the little criminals target cars even where there's residue from the suction pad on the cradle that comes with the satnav. So, basically, any recommendations on alternative easy-to-remove cradles? Or is it a case of wiping the screen clean every time I leave the car (I bloody hope not)?

Thanks,

vinegar_tom

Yeah, theres no need to be completely paranoid about it unless your winscreen is covered in scum and its really obvious - just taking the device and cradle off will save you the most bother.

Christ Tom, Where abouts are you going in Manchester? I haven't had any problems YET with my satnav in Manchester touch wood. However, I don't tend to drive it in to town or anything like that.

Wise move mate to give the screen a wipe & take it with you.

I know of a few truck driving mates who have lost their Tom Tom's.

all the above is void if the theifs see you taking the cradle off and wiping the screen clean :(

make sure you take tomtom with you and hide all cables as best you can

My step dad had the cradle swiped from his week old company car. And that was from the driveway outside the house

The guy who I bought my car from had a GPS reciever in the rear quarter window, and the sat nav unit in the windscreen.

I've had suction marks on them since I bought the car, and haven't *touch wood* had any problems. I will get round to cleaning the glass eventually.

If you really are paranoid, have a look at Proclip, clips designed to click on different places of different cars. Each one is individually different for each model/year car etc...

I've got one for my PDA because it sits the PDA in a nice easy to use place in my car and takes up no window space, as opposed to these suction thingys. I'm very happy with mine and it takes all of 2 seconds to slip into place.

Technically it has double sided tape to hold it in place but it doesnt even need that, if they made it rubberised it would be perfect.

TomTom etc really need to take some responsibility here , some king of visible removable panel / card that is keyed to the unit is needed

It's so easy for them to do that, but they wont, easy earner for them, if a person has had their satnav nicked, they'll go out and buy another...

 at TT

Like headunits, you take the usefull front facia part that is key coded or something? It would sell VERY well....

If you update TomTom to the latest version then you have the option of passwording your unit.

Really? Couldn't you just reflash the sd card though? Not totally sure how the stand alone units work, but i thought its similar to the PDA software?
