Recommended Anti virus software suite

In it's simplest form I would think that your choice of platform depends on your risk exposure.

If you frequent torrent websites ( V.Risky) get every bit of protection you can.

If your PC has sensitive data on it, again it's a lot cheaper to pay for some decent protection up front than to solve the carnage afterwards if you get stung by some malicious software. For example Bitdefender comes with Ransomware protection as standard.

If you have ANY suspicion about opening a file you can also throw it up here https://www.virustotal.com/gui/home/upload and it'll check it against 58 different AV Engines

As you can guess I use Bitdefender and have done so for years. I also use Malwarebytes as a 2nd line of defence.

Not matter how good your defence is, it's no substitute for common sense and being aware of dodgy links, software and messages though.

Much the much these days, the top dogs have fairly similar detection rates for viruses and/or malware, and varying degrees of false detection.

I only use the Windows one these days, but i suggest Eset for anyone that asks and to only use the AV only package unless they feel the need for the full suite, the standalone AV runs really light (which can matter for older/slower systems) or at least it did last time i used it (that's why i used it to begin with).
