After looking at whether I should get an i7 as Im upgrading for Watch Dogs, Arma 2/3 and future games, I think everyone so far have said to just get a cooler and overclock my CPU.

I have a i5 3570k 3.40ghz and Im going for a 780ti GPU.

So far Im looking at this

1 x Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom CPU Cooler £49.99

Someone said to Overclock to 4.50ghz, but I dont want to go over the top, just to what would be suitable for my card to be able to run these games.

Would that cooler be able to sustain a good enough overclock for what Im after?

Thanks

You cannot go wrong with that one mate! That cooler will be fine for that overclock. You could also remove the stock fans and use a single TY-147 which does just a good a job!

Yes it is a good one, just make sure it fits in your case and that it wont hit your ram or cards

I would reconsider buying a double tower for an Ivy bridge. There is no point as the chips have <100W TDP even after heavy overclock and the problem with their cooling is the high power density of the small die combined with the poor performance of the pre applied thermal compound between the die and the IHS. I would go for a decent high end single tower to ensure low noise and if the chip is good it can go well over 4.5GHz. If it's bad, even Corsair H105 won't help you overclock it more. If you like Alpenfoehn Himalaya, Brocken and Matterhorn Pure will be better solutions on my opinion. The dual towers are for socket 2011 and the AMDs mainly where the TDP can go over 250W and you need all this area.

The k2 will be grand with the 3570k, used it myself. Due to the greater surface area the heat gets dissipated quicker with less noise. I first used the k2 on a 4.2ghz i7 920. Max temps in ibt were 67c with the stock fans. Previous cooler was a single tower supermega, dual 1900 rpm akasa vipers. Temps in ibt at the same oc were 77c and an awful lot more noise.

For me the only other than K2 would be the TRUE Spirit 140 Power. Cools as well as NH-D14 and is only £34.99.. not in stock yet... but do soon.

Here's more info and testing of TRUE Spirit 140 Power

If you can fit it in the case it is a no brainer. I myself have a TRUE Spirit 140 and can recommend it to anyone whose case has support for 170mm coolers. Still that wide base of the Power will not be fully functional on the tiny rectangular core of the IB.
