Recommended external storage

Anything Firewire (400 vs. 800 doesn't really matter when you're dealing with a single drive) that isn't made by LaCie or Iomega. The former because the build quality is appalling, the second because I don't trust Iomega's ability to store anything after the click-of-death incident.
 
I had a LaCIE NAS one time, RMA'd it back to OcUK because it was truly awful.

Said it was Mac compatible, yet it wouldn't connect to my MBP using USB 2, which was a bit pointless.

Later checking of the LaCIE forums showed that it was a known issue, and they would not be sorting it.

Why take the chance? LaCie use the cheapest drives they can get hold of and put them inside nice looking boxes. At least if you buy a WD external drive (or build your own) you know you're getting a WD drive inside.

Personally I'd get the D2 Quadra. You pay a bit more, but compared to my WD My Book's, the D2 feels uber solid.

If you have an Apple store nearby they stock them both - worth taking a look before you buy one.

And? :o Everyone has different experiences - Its potluck, I've had no problem with them. Two peopling saying they have had issues doesnt constitute as making them all to be duff drives :p

I cant see any issues with build quality either.

amazed you have issues with lacie... ive got plenty of them and over fw800 there mega, and they are probably the best build arround...

It's a bit of a sweeping generalisation... It's not like they're sticking Exelstor drives in them. Most drives from the big five are decent enough you just get the odd line that has issues. By the time you know it's usually about to get replaced anyway.
 
I found my LaCiE very sturdy (very, very heavy!), didn't notice any speed issues but the software management and general web-based GUI let it down badly.

I want one of these, not because it's in the Leopard VTM, but damn, it'd be sweet with a Mac Pro :cool:

..would almost make me want to use Time Machine!

I ordered one from the apple store at the same time I ordered Leopard, its awesome, fast and quiet!

Can't fault it whatsoever. The only idiots that gave it bad reviews on the apple site, didn't realise you have to depress the power on button for about 2 seconds to switch it on!
