Right i know laptops are crap at playing games, but basicly i dont have the funds/ space for a desktop so im stuck with what i've got:
HP DV6-1299ea
AMD Turion X2 Dual -Core Mobile RM-75, 4.0GB RAM, ATI MObility Radeon HD 4650 Series
Windows 7 ultimate
I like FPS and racing games mostly so if anyone can recommend some that my machine can run that would be mucho appreciated! I tried running black ops on the lowest settings but my laptop still failed miserably and it was too laggy to play
Actually mate, you have got a good laptop there, despite popular belief, you no longer need a £2500 Desktop to really enjoy most of the new games(consoles are holding PC development back) Black ops must be badly optimized is all I can say, games like this, which I are badly programmed (unless your 4650 has only 512MB or is not working at it's optimum level) avoid. Try the demo first basically.
Games that use the Unreal Engine 3(which I think looks okay, but is also badly optimized), such as Batman: AA, run badly on my lappy, on any setting. The Unreal engine 3 maybe optimized for ATI cards though, I don't know.
Your graphics card is better then mine, if it has 1gb+ of memory (I use a lappy too), I have an nvidia gt 325 1gb.
It's actually a midrange direct X 10.1 card, I have done extensive research into mobile graphics because I wanted a best value one.
Check this site out:
ATI Mobility 4650
I can run F1 2010 on high settings in certain areas, and get 30 fps.
Mafia II ran beautifully, on at least medium settings which still looked stunning on a 50" plasma.
Battlefield: Bad company 2 runs very well, I get over 30fps on medium settings I think, whatever settings they are better graphics then their console counterparts. I'm pretty sure it was medium...
Last Remnant: This is a great looking jrpg and runs on high, but I get the occasional stutter, this may be the game though, I just spent about an hour on it (played it before). You'll probably never play this but it gives you an idea.
Resident Evil 5 works well.
All pretty graphics intensive too. Racing games like F1 2010 really need at least 30FPS.
Basically set your sights higher, because some of the games recommend here would run okay on a built in intel chip with shared memory, you have a decent dedicated card especially if it has 1gb.
EDIT: Avoid the GTA 4 games, they are the most shockingly badly optimized ports known to man, or at least the worst I've had the displeasure of playing, or rather not playing because they were unplayable.
