Recommended Garaphics cards?

Stay clear of any of the ATI offerings, they are cheap and cheerful but don't perform well and are very loud.

ROFLMAO... I take it you missed the :P out there... cos ATI perform VERY VERY well and if anything Nvidia tend to be louder.

uh oh roll on ATI Fanboys :D

Just my advice to the OP ... and not bad advice either if I say so myself ;)

In terms of what I've been reading in the forums and from other online sources, G71 is definately the card to go for.

I've heard reports that the X1900 is loud, sounds like an airplane when playing 3D games.

I also understand it consumes more power than the NVIDIA cards.

Their latest card barely outperforms the 7800 GTX and with the new NVIDIA series literally just a few weeks away, it would be totally foolish to go for an X1900.

There is infact only one positive to go for the ATI card and that is price. So if you can afford £500 go for the NVIDIA otherwise go ATI

You probably had the same opinion about intel and AMD, that is until the AMD64 started thrashing Intel on gaming performance AND price.

Do you remember fx5800? That was a great card... not. If there was no competetion Nvidia would still be selling us fx4400s for £1000 each. ;)

I advise you purchase a low end PCI-E card (whatever brand it doesnt matter), complete bottom of the range and cheap as you can find (also check 2nd hand). Maybe pay ~ £30 for this.

This will enable you to continue to use your new PC while you wait a few weeks for the NVIDIA Geforce 7900 GTX 512 to arrive. We are looking at a release date of around March 14th so not long now.

Gibbo posted that this new 7900 series card will cost around the same as the 7800 GTX 512 costs now and the 7800 will go down in price.

It would be a waste of money buying a needless low end card.

7800GTX 512mb is discontinued so other 7800GTX / GT cards are likely to stay at same prices as now. Even when 7900 series released.

X1900XTX is the fastest card available. So according to you the Nvidia 7800 series cards must be real poor performers then. The cards are well manufactured - if you ever held one you would know.

You really, dont have a clue, do you.

The X1900XTX is marginally louder than a 7800GTX 512MB, not loud really, if you have ever actually used one - you obviuously havent.

G71 will more than likely cost £150 or more pounds than the X1900XTX.

At present ATI cards are the best value for money offerings in the high end segment. Best performance & best price.

Hmmm I would suggest as everyone else has said a X1900XT(X).

OF course if you can get a X1800XT for much cheaper then go for that. The overclock like hell and handle any game out today very well indeed.

TBH the G71 will be ridiculously expensive compared to the x1900XT even if it is faster it won't be very good value for money.

What would you rather do:, Spend going on £600 on a card that will be pretty useless come DX10. Or spend <£400 on a card that offers 90% of the performance and save that extra £200 towards a nice card once DX10 games start rearing their ugly(read pretty) heads.

Also on the cpu front a Opteron 165/170 seems like a good choice. Dual core, relatively cheap and insane overclockers.

No need to get shirty about this. If you dont like my posts, don't read them but I'm entitled to my own opinions.

Granted, at present the X1900 is better but *not for long*

Now I'm seeing sources which suggest the 7900 may actually end up CHEAPER than the X1900.

He's not getting shirty.. just a poor idea to give out bad advice like you where. Your right that your entitled to give out an opinion.. but it helps if they are based on fact. Fact is there is nothing 'cheap' or poor quality about ATI's offerings and they are the best performing chipsets at the moment.

Will the 7900 be quicker.. NO-ONE KNOWS.. except anyone who may have a pre-release one for testing to release reviews when they are officially released.. but they will be NDA'd so we don't know if indeed the 7900 will be cheaper... also is 'competitivly priced' really cheaper.. and is it cheaper than the RRP or the etail price.

The expectation, especially from Nvidia fans, is that the 7900 will be a faster chip.. fact is though that we just don't know.
