Recommended non-subscription-based RPGs?

Hi,

Anyone care to recommend any current RPGs that aren't subscription-based? I refuse to play any subscription-based RPGs, partly because Im tight :D but mainly because I disagree with paying £40 for a piece of software and then £10/month for the privilege of being able to use that software.

Guild Wars is free and popular.

All I can say is you get what you pay for. The average MMORPG costs in excess of $10,000,000 to make and maintain (bandwidth, servers, development etc). Without that monthly subscription of £15 the devs rely purely on box sales to recoup their costs. That is a lot of software sales.

You could try Saga of Ryzom if you want a good mature community or you could try Shadowbane, both are free AFAIK
 
Thanks guys- I've heard good things about Oblivion so I think it may be on a certain someone's (i.e. moi) birthday list ;) Guildwars also looks pretty impressive (or at least the graphics look quite nice) although that shouldnt really matter seeing as I used to while away the hours MUDding via a telnet session :D
 
Ragnarok Online (private servers) is a great game to past the time on. The game is very cutesy anime - esque but it's got a huge number of classes and depth. If you enjoyed games like Diablo II (which is also a great non subscription RPG) then Ragnarok is the game for you
 
the £10 isnt for you to use the software youve bought, but for the servers and maintenance of them.

Theres a thread on here about Baldurs gate and Icewind dale, both coming out with the expansions for £10 each.

Plus im confused, is it an RPG you want or a MMORPG??

Ultima Online is still IMHO one of the best MMORPGs out there, you can find free servers easily enough but finding one that you like can be a challenge!
