Should I upgrade to 2Gb? mI'm running bf2142 at 1024x768 with everything on full, bar AA (@2x) and the lighting is medium. I notced a lot of stuttering and HDD access the last time I played and wondered if it was time to upgrade?

2142 uses just over 1Gb RAM when running maxed out...my windows...maybe 300-400Mb so 2Gb more than ample on XP anyway. The type of RAM doesnt matter as long as its the right speed. It will reduce the stuttering...it will be a very noticeable improvement!

found a 512 stick spare but can't use it :( my mobo only supports single sided RAM in slots 2 & 3 and the module I've found was double sided. I'm asking for a swap in the MM...... so will 1.5Gb do? and by 'maxed out' did you mean graphics settings or when the gameplay gets heavy, i.e game engine stuff?

Will 1.5Gb be a decent jump from 1Gb while playing bf2142? I ran task manager and the most RAM it used was 714Mb, does this mean that I'll be wasting money?

Yes. If you have more, it WILL use more. It will be using a lot of the page file. Speeds up loading levels loads. Also depends on your graphics card.

Tweak Guides. Excellent resource, should help you with tweaking for maximum frame rate. Also follow their guide on tweaking windows.

Should help you significantly!

That guide has very few tweaks that can actually improve game performance. I read it a while back hoping i could optimise the game a little, but nothing in that guide was of any relevance to me. A bit of a disappointment, if you ask me.

toxic, do you have 300-400MB of background tasks running when you boot up?

It wouldn't surprise me. Later Battlefield titles are notorious for guzzling up your RAM and, chances are, that extra bit could make a world of difference.

I'll report back whe I get it

Ok, I've now got 1.5Gb and yes, it has made the world of difference when I max out the gfx. All maps are now fully playable, It still stutters very, very slightly and not for half as long, so ideally 2Gb is required for MAX imo(or maybe I'll just tweak a bit ;)). Cheers Guys.

You will get a good boost in load times with 2gig also, a nice advantage when your playing online, get you in there quick so you can run for cover lol :)

The stuttering could be caused by paging on an overpopulated drive that will choke transfer speeds, where do you have the pagefile? have you a second hdd you can put it on? do you keep your system at low fragmentation levels?
