I used to have a super strong magnet that snapped of the end of one of those pickup tools where you drop something into an engine and need a magnet to reach it.

It was about 1cm diameter and worked for any plasterboard screws even through 15mm sound panel.

Unfortunately I lost it and have been in search of a replacement. I got another pickup tool but the magnet is nowhere near as strong.

I have tried magnets from local tool shops they don't work.

I bought a neodymium magnet rated to carry 16-20kg from eBay and despite the fact it clamps onto things well it has no reach through plasterboard.

Anyone know a magnet for the job?

Thanks.

Maybe it's fake and just a regular magnet ... If it can allegedly lift 16kg you'd really struggle to pull it off anything.

yup laptop hdds have a similar but smaller magnet
You have a newish build house then?
Timber studs in our house or solid walls but 3.5inch hdd magnets are VERY strong

We used to find 1 rafter/joist with a nail(find centre of )them measure 16 inches (old house like yours will MOST likely be this)rinse and repeat
then chalk line

Have also use a stud finder, mixed success with those, but mostly accurate especially in a use like yours
:)
