Hi folks,

I haven't got the foggiest when it comes to what laptops are solid and reliable these days. I'm looking for a laptop as a gift for the girlfriend. It won't be used for anything more strenuous than some Facebook apps and perhaps music, but none the less, I'd like a snappy machine with good display (both size/resolution and colour), wifi, and multi-card reader as she has a multitude of cameras that she likes to upload pictures with.

Recommendations welcome, I am much obliged :)

-2.2 dual core
-4gb ddr3
-320gb Hd

Plenty of options on the budget - you'll have to decide on portability - can get anything from 12 to 20 inch screen - weight is an issue with the increasing size, and battery life will take a hit with the bigger screens.

As for brands - Dell is the flavour of the month on this forum - in 13, 15 or 16 inch flavour.

You could even get a cheap MacBook on that budget.

Closer to home, this one is advertised at the top of the page - looks a lot of machine for the cash.

none of you would recomend a netbook?

netbooks are laptops that use intels "atom" processor, its designed for small size and low power consumption. they've been around for a while, you may have heared of the asus "Eee pc", that was the first. the benefits are longer battery life(6 hours) and lower weight(1.5kg) and they're all smaller then regular laptops(13 inch is the highest).

while the performance is somewhat less then that of a core2 laptop they're more then capable of internet/pictures/email type stuff and the nvidia "ION" based netbooks that are just coming out now can do some more intensive stuff like rendering HD video(they all have HDMI out aswell) and games.

ION based nebooks arent officially released yet (companies are waiting for windows 7 at the end of october), to see the performance you can get from this new chip see this youtube video.

here are a selection you may want to consider:

asus Eee pc, asus was the first to use the atom processor, this is the most "average" netbook about. you can get it for around £270.

Dell Inspiron Mini, dell have a range of netbooks, theres nothing special about these either, they just look nice. they start from £200. Edit: take this with a pinch of salt tho, i've heard many people bitch about the build quality of dells laptops.

samsung n510, this is the first "ION" out(same one in the video), do some googling and you'll find it. i saw one for £390 somewhere.

HP/compac Mini 311c,this is the other "ION" thats close to release and its availabe from OCUK (preorder), imo its slightly better looking, if its the HP version not the compac, unfortunatly OCUK are stocking the compac version, i think the HP version will be out with the release of windows 7 tho. heres the link to the product page on OCUK, £315.

Sony VAIO P-series, this one is much more expensive then the previous and has less performance but is retardedly good looking just take a look at this. its not very practical tho, theres a mini trackball in the middle of the keyboard rather then a touch pad which is anoying, and the screen is obviously smaller. however there are some really nice things about it, you can have the cross media bar interface(PS3 and PSP GUI), they all come with 2 gigs of ram(have more stuff open at once and have vista pre-installed) and they come with solid state drives(tho 60gb isn't much). £700.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, size is not much of an issue, it won't be used outside of our flat, but still needs to be usable around the flat/on the terrace etc. :) I'm liking the 6930g at the moment. :)
