I need to review a piece of software and want to be able to record something.

I know there are programs out there to do it because TotalTraining and Lynda.com do it for their Adobe training videos etc...

Anyone got first hand info on anything to use?

Couple years ago I bought snagit ver 7 and it is a great tool to use, many more functions that just recording your desktop or parts of it.
They do a trial version for their new version. Sure there may even be some freeware ones with just basic functionality

Also forgot to mention, that i need it to record voice too, although i could import the vid made into premiere and then put a voice over it, i'd rather do it all in one if possible.

Camtasia

Or if you want something cheaper, Techsmith (Camtasia creators) have put some basic screen recording functions in Snagit which includes the ability to annotate IIRC.

I tried Camstudio, and my audio was very crackly and some parts of the video showed in 256 colours which didn't look right.
