I am looking to add the ability to record to a HTPC build. The sources will either be from a VCR (I can go scart down to S video) and a Virgin Media box (Again I could do scart down to S Video).

What sort of card do I need? Do I need a TV tuner card or could I just use a capture card? Any recommendations?

Nearly any video capture card, analaog or hybrid tv tuner and some graphics cards with TV in can capture from those sources, jsut make sure they have drivers for you chosen operating system.

The media centre versions of Xp or vista would be prefferred as they handle TV scheduling in which case also get the microsoft remote and sensors for changing channels on external boxes.

I use leadtek cars for analogu and digital (in different pc's) mostly reccomended

The old card (x800 xl) I've got in the machine I'm planning to use as a HTPC can handle component and S-Video in. Can someone recommend some software to record from it?

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but at least it's on topic! :p

Are you planning to have a graphics card in your build? If so what type? If my 3 year old card has S-video and component inputs then I'd be dissapointed if all modern cards didnt.

I would be going with onboard as the boards I am looking at have a HDMI out. Most modern cards also have S-video and component outs no ins i think
