Recording on screen

Hey guys, not sure if this is the correct place for this thread, but I was wondering if any of you guys out there knew much about recording your screen for video creation? I was going to try and make a few videos of games ect. and I was wondering if anyone knows of any software (preferably free) that I can use to record stuff such as Skyrim ect.

FRAPS for game recording I believe is the most used, doesn't work on non-game software though in my experience.
