Recording video with a webcam

I recently got a MSI Starcam 370i, and have been messing about with it's features.

I noticed that it can record video straight onto my harddisk, almost like a camcorder, but in a raw state, so just a few minutes takes up a few gig.

Does anyone know of any way I can have it compress to another format on the fly so as to get a longer record time?
