i have fraps and when i record whats a good programme to edit it with because i use window movie maker but the file is massive at 1.8gb and i have a compresser programme but it dont support mp4 :/ so i dont no what to use

if you want decent quality they are big files.

most people upload mp4

fraps avg 1gb minute .

wmm will do it good enough depends on how long you doing a recording. for eg im doing a bioshock infinite video at moment its 30 mins long. @ 1080 even shrunk down its 4-5gig upload.

720 it will be 1half gig upload.

720 hd is minimum you should upload tbh.

For compression, use Virtual Dub combined with the Xvid codec. At 1080p quality it compressed it incredibly well. I recently compressed a 180GB video file into just 6.8GB.

That was a 3 hour video however. For clips to upload to youtube, I can normally compress them from around 40GB into 500mb.

Xvid is old and outdated. You want to use h.264.

Do this if you want perfect quality at a very small file size:

1. Record in the best quality you can (uncompressed RGB24 if you have the hard drive space)

2. Import into Vegas and edit it to your needs.

3. Render out of Vegas as uncompressed AVI.

4. Use MeGUI or Handbrake to encode the final uncompressed AVI into h.264. Handbrake is easier, MeGUI is more configurable. Use the CRF option at about 20 to get near perfect quality.

Gameplay Recording

Okay well i no most people use fraps so heres my problem

i record at 60 FPS on fraps
and lets say i play a game of fifa
that records 14-16 Mins
when i go into my folder it turns them into clips and when i look at the size of them together its around 85gb o.0
and when i use movie maker to edit it then goes into 1.8gb around that same as some other programmes ive used

so how can i record around 15 mins of gameplay in 1080p so that i can put it on youtube im so confused :(

i record at 60 FPS on fraps

Youtube processes all the videos at 30fps, so there isn't any point capturing any higher than that.
Record at 30 FPS (29.97 to be exact, to match up with the editing software if using vegas) and you'll have lower file sizes than at 60fps :-)

EDIT: After some research.. Turns out FPS doesn't have an effect on the file size!! doesn't seem logical, if you're capturing more frames, surely your file size would be larger??

I second the Virtual Dub + Handbrake method, though you may want to use a more complex editing program if you want to do anything fancy with the editing... I also recommend telling FRAPS not to record your microphone, and record that at the same time using Audacity or similar - this way you can import your own voice track into your editor and sound balance it seperately... I've had a few recordings ruined by my own voice being either way too quiet or way too loud

Thanks guys MediaCoder worked fine i put all my clips into movie maker turned it into 1080p and that was 1.8gb then MediaCoder put it into a few 00 mb :D

XSplit(Not Free), FFSplit and OBS are all streaming program but also support local recording. You have lots of options to reduce file size with all of them.

I record using fraps as dxtory never seemed to work any better.

I use sony vegas to edit and output, vegas has nice rendering options like using cuda, my rig renders at slightly faster than realtime for 1080p 32mbit MP4 High profile.

Dxtory is better because it gives you options to record with different codecs. If your computer isn't fast enough for RBG24 uncompressed (which is the only option in Fraps), then Dxtory allows you to record with Ut Video Codec which is much less intensive and has smaller file sizes, while still being lossless.
