Let's say you clone your hard drive by doing a backup with Acronis True Image, then wipe your hard drive with something like killdisk to make it all nice and fresh, and then restore your backup. But before the backup and wipe, you forgot to use a program like Recuva to try and retrieve files or photos you accidentally deleted that were no longer in your recycle bin but that you wanted back. Would Recuva be able to retrieve those files from your backup ghost image, ie, does a ghost image even carry across traces of deleted files buried in the harddrive?

Unfortunately not, unless you did a sector by sector backup which i doubt very much was/is the default option with acronis.

the deleted files would have been removed from the file table but not from the disk. The space taken up by the files would then be counted as free space, which most image programs don't backup unless you choose sector by sector backup.

The image size with sector by sector backup and free space, even if compressed would be almost as large as the original drive itself, so by default it is disabled.
