Ok Folks

My External HD seem to done something strange. It not mounting on my Mac at all.. But in disk utilities it is there.

I have downloaded a software for my Windows pc called TransMac to see if it finds any files but it says nothing there and i have 45gig of photos on it and i am really wanting to get them back I am very annoyed now..

Any help

OS X is pathetic at trying to recover from disk errors, I've had corrupt disks several times and Disk Warrior has saved the day each time.. it's not free though unfortunately.

Without knowing what file system it's going to be difficult to help. If you just plugged it in out of the box and it worked then I'd hazard a guess at FAT32, in which case plug it into a Windows machine and see if you can fix it on that.

I've got 50 year old women working for my employers who can give better details. I give up.

I'd go to the pub if it weren't raining.

sorry..

I have plugged my HD into my windows laptop and it wont open at all.... But it does find it.

When I plug it into my Mac it wont mount but does appear in Disk Utility. I just dont understand it was working fine other day... Do you think HD Buggered?

I have a feeling it be able to format but dont want to as want try recover my 45 gig of pictures

Again without any useful details like the make and model of the drive I'm flying blind.

Could be as simple as a faulty power supply which is common on external drives. The manufacturer try and shave 50p off by using some el-cheapo Chinese PSU that's designed to last 2 months past the warranty expiry.

Could be failing drive, event log errors on the Windows box with a red icon referring to the disk controller or bad blocks are usually a good indication of this.

I'm going for a bath as it's still raining.

It a Iomega Portable Firewire HD. I dont see any error anywhere and I thing it a failing drive as the light does not flash as it should..

Disco lights. Wooooo!

LOL now that made me laugh.

Anyway, when your back from your lovely holiday, try formatting it then use file scavenger or get data back to recover the files. Thats in windows mind and works a treat. I formatted a external drive and got all my data back no problem.
