recover/reset administrator password for 2000/XP?

as above but must be legal way, microsoft's way

got a client came in at work today with a laptop, the laptop was used by this client's ex employee who got dismissed earlier today and need to access the files quickly as possible.

so does anyone know how to recover or reset the administrator password? i've checked MS website but nothing#

There are various bootdisks that allow you to change the admin password from dos.

You can download an iso image that you burn to a CD and boot from. Try googling for 'password reset boot disk' or something.

Yep, a bootdisk can be a cd
