recovering data back from a formatted hard drive ?

Google for Getdataback.

In the mean time, do not use that drive. Do not install anything on it whatsoever.

Formatting a drive doesn't actually delete the data, it just wipes the file allocation. Then, the sectors are overwritten bit by bit as the drive is used again. So, the more you install, the more you lose.

You probably already know, but it's a vital thing to keep in mind when trying to recover data.

it depends, was it a quick format or a full format?

quick simply deletes the toc file, full turns the entire plate to 1's or 0's can't remember which.

either way getdataback can get data back from either type, but if you've done a full format it will take longer.

as above do not install or use that drive at all.

I used that drive unsuccessfully though I knew my hard drive was buggered beyond belief. It was recommended to me by people on these forums and in real life too so I'm sure it's good.

But make sure once again you don't write anymore data on that drive or e.g. install the program there :)

I used GetBackData for a file recovery for a customer.

What happned was his Windows was corrupt, so I formatted drive, reinstalled windows xp and a few tools on there. Then he asked if I could get his pics back. Around 3.2Gbs worth from Cape Town..

3 hours later I got all his pictures back from previous instlation of xp, this was after formatting the drive and reinstalling Windows XP on again.

Very, very good program! :)
