Hi all, i had a problem with my laptop and windows....windows was not repairable but i cannot afford to loose the data "pictures" on the hd.. I was recommended to connect the hd to my windows pc and remove the data... I went into my local pc shop and i was lent a usb device that i can hook up my pc. I have done this, and after some problems i finaly have it there looking at me saying Local Disk (G) but when trying to access it after some time of loading i get a I/O error.....HELP!

sounds like the hdd is borked!

can you explain the windows error you have in a bit more detail, might give us some clues..

it was all explained in another thread. Basicaly i was getting a blue screen when on windows loading screen. But t flashed on and of so quickley it was impossible to figure out what the error was.... I was reccomended to remove the hd and connect to a pc... Any ideas.....or is it looking like a full wipe and fresh install?

Try with a knoppix live cd mate. That way you should still be able to access the drive provided it isn't a mechanical failure.

I have an IDE to USB lead that I use to get data from laptop drives.

If the drive has totally given up, I usually get "there is a problem with the USB device etc".
I may reboot, and it will work for one session only......this is just down to how far the drive has gone.
Even though they are hot swappable, it's always best IME to hook em up first. (before turning PC on)

I recently got the data from a friends laptop drive, and he had tried it in a USB caddy wirh no luck at all yet I got it to work.
