How easy is this?

I've got a load of JPG's that are on a hard drive I've recently formatted, can anyone recommend a program that I can use to get them back? Free would be good, but I don't mind paying for something more powerful. :)

Active@undelete 5.1

Hi mate,

I use active@undelete 5.1. ( now upto v5.5) Works for both quick format and full format ( though this takes longer. You select the physical hardrive from the software, click advanced scan as simple scan is for scanning partitions already known. If you leave advanced scanning, it will take a few hours, but its looking for more partitions. in actual fact, it finds the main one in about 2 secs, so you can click cancel. Then select the partition and select simple scan, which take 2-3 mins, depending on HDD size, and it should detect your files jpgs etc.
Drag n drop to the recover pane, click recover, specify directory and job done. It is not a free software, costs 40$ but once you've got it, you can always re-download from their site and theres a trial version available to make sure it works before hand (i.e. can only recover 64kb etc). Just my 2p. :-) good luck recovering.

If you've not written much to it since, most recovery programs, free or otherwise, should be able to do that fairly easily, especially if it was an NTFS drive. It's just a case of them scanning the drive for yoya (JPG) headers. Have a look on download.com, see what you can find.
