I'm trying to help someone get back into their facebook account.

They received a message last night and followed the instructions which has allowed someone else into the account.

The "hacker" then created a duplicate facebook account with the same name and moved the mobile number over to the new account.

We have logged into the new account and removed the mobile number.
We have attempted to start the account recovery process, we have entered the original password, which facebook detects as an old password and confirms that the account needs recovering.
However, the only options are
recover using an email that doesn't belong to this person
use a device that is already logged in (he doesn't have any)
enter the password

If I search for his account using the mobile number it just brings up the new account that we have removed the number from.

I am not sure if his email address was ever linked to facebook, I am assuming not because there is no option to send a link to the original email address like the facebook help page suggests there should be.

I can't see any obvious way to contact facebook to get help with this, just articles that all loop back to each other.

Any ideas ?

had it a few weeks back done the recover finally got into it then could not remove the rogue email that was setup, done this numerous times then one day all was good was able to remove the said email change password and setup authenticator too.

Facebook is terrible - I've just tried to setup 2FA and it says I'm using a device that I don't usually use. Sure, I've only had this phone for 2 years...

Delete Facebook forever, the world would be a better place without it.
I'm social media free but I had a long forgotten account (still had the password) and Facebook helpdesk bot was asking me to submit my drivers license or passport for verification, not a chance! My account even had a fake name because what kind of moron puts their real name on the internet? But I was told fake names are now against the rules so I would have never been able to verify my account but there were still some pictures of myself in there.

I couldn't believe Facebook was holding my personal data hostage from a bygone era of my life. I kept trying to log in a couple of times a month and once it let me in! I deleted the account instantly.

Yeah I had an account at one point aroun 2008, I didn't do much with then realised the whole thing was a bad idea, deleted my account.

.....or so I had thought.

Several years later I cant remember how, but discovered my facebook page was indeed still alive, so next time I made sure and followed a fairly lenghty process to get rid of it for good.

The only social media I do is Linkedin and I only have a profile there becuase of my line of work its worth doing, I don't actively use it and there isnt a lot of information on there.

Seriously? Now I have to check somehow but my wife doesn't have FB either.

No Linkedin here because I don't need it but I understand if its required for your work.

Oh ffs, does this mean you're not selling a 2022 Lamborghini Huracan for £15k then
Yes sorry, that advert is legit, I've been really busy this morning and forgot to message you back ;)

On a more serious note, and apart from the pretty much unanimous opinion that facebook is poison, do I have any options here ?

Goto recover account it should be there
recover account send us to a login page where there is an option to search for an account.
we can find his account now only by searching firstname.lastname
it asks if we want to secure the account, we click the secure account button and it says that we need to login.
we input his old password, it identifies that it is an old password, and says that we need to change it.

then we are presented with 3 options
1 - get a reset code to an (unrecognised) email
2 - send a notification to another device that is logged in (he doesn't have any)
3 - enter the password (new or old)

if we use option 3 and put in the old password it just goes around in circles.

Any facebook help page that I go to that gives me links to click on sends me to the search for account page above.

Yup I found to just leave it a day or 2 then try again rather than peppering it.
