Recovering Overwritten Document in Word

My friend has overwritted her word document that contains her dissertation. Is there any method that she can attempt to recover the older file?

If you've overwritten a file with another one using the same filename then no, I don't think it's possible. Is it on a Time Machine backup?

A very good option (that has always worked for me) is to use one of several backups you would make for something like a dissertation.
