Recovering photos from SD card

My colleague's card has gone kaput in holiday and he's asked me to take a look. He's tried a few pieces of software but does anyone have any recommendations?

photorec would be the first one to try.

Ta, but it hangs on disk identification (as does Disk Management).

Doesn't work either because I can't view/select the actual SD card.
