Recovering Saved Wii U games

Hi, I struggled to get a game working and it looks like it was the updates that caused the game to hang.

so at last resort I factory resetted my wii u but before that I saved all of my years worth of saved games on to a USB stick successfully.

now after the reset the wii u fails to recognise my usb and asks to format it.

quick google suggests I lost all of my 6 year worth of saved games - is there a way out of this to recover the data on the usb disk? or is that the end?

Bit of a long shot but could you transfer your saves to a laptop format the USB stick with the wii u then transfer saves back to USB stick.

But how can i transfer to a laptop?

when i plug the usb stick with the saved game data in the laptop it asks me to format the drive
