I have recently bought a laptop, which has a recovery/restore partition on the hdd. I replaced the hdd with a ssd and I would like to use the hdd as a storage drive in an external caddy.

My question is, can i keep the recovery partition intact and format the rest of the drive to use as storage. then in the future if i decide to sell the laptop can i reinstall the hdd and activate the recovery partition to restore the lappy to its original state?

Yep, that should be fine.
Just make sure you don't format the recovery partition at any point.
Also don't assign a drive letter to the recovery partition to keep it hidden in Windows.
