Hi.

when applying for jobs through a recruiter, have you ever had to provide ID and/or reference to the actual recruiter before being put forward for a role?

i just been asked by a few users and found this a bit strange indeed. my line manager would not give reference as he says it is just a ploy to get them in his books to spam him for jobs later down the line but the ID? why?

if i get the job and the company wishes to have reference and ID then fine, but recruiters even before u get the job?

strange

To check you are legally entitled to work in the UK. Standard practice now by many recruiters to save them wasted time of finding you a job only to find you are an illegal.

Certain public sector employers expect these kind of hoops, so the pimp may be just getting ahead of the game - but i would be very wary of handing anything over otherwise.

Wait, you have to ask your boss for a reference before you even apply for a job? Sounds rather dodgy to me. That could make it interesting at work!

IF you want a new job and want these guys to find it then i guess you play by their rules.

I guess it rules out time wasters and BS but opens you up to spam city.

A lot of the time it all depends on what the job is. In most cases references aren’t required until you get a job and you should only give these to the employer not the agent.

It’s likely they are just wanting the name, position of your manager and details of the current organisation your working for so that they can contact them and hassle the people working there saying that they have heard you are leaving and they can find a replacement for you.

Not all but most employment agencies are scum as a contractor I have seen this little trick 100s of times. Just don’t provide details they also like the trick of calling you and saying does so and so work at your company still as "insert position" and you automatically no its Bill Gates. So using the contact number on the company website they just call and ask for that person and then hassle that person forever more.

I had to hand over refs plus I'D to recruiters on friday. it's unlikely I'll have to sit an interview though as it's for a factory job. Get taken on after 12 weeks though, so those 12 weeks equate to my interview.
