Recurrent error on Mac Mini when trying to "sleep"

Hi,

I have recently purchased a brand new Mac Mini 2023 M2 pro

I have added an OWC NVME enclosure connected via TB4 cable to act as the start up drive. It contains a crucial 4TB NVME. Again, purchased brand new.

All works well, but I notice that each time I try to sleep the computer the NVME enclousre disk lights seems to stay flashing away as though activity is taking place.

When I wake the Mini I get the, "Your computer closed down due to a problem" message. Everytime.

I thought initially it could be a duff cable, so I replaced the TB cable between the NVME enclouse and the computer. I get the same message no matter wth TB port I use on the back of the Mini.

The contents of the error report are below. To be fair, it means nothing to me.

Any Mac wizards on here able to tell me what's going on?

Perhaps more importantly, how to fix it?

You are booting from the NVMe drive? Or am I reading this wrong?
 
I might be wrong but I don't think it's possible for sleep type functions to work when booting from an external device.
 
Oh, ok. I previously had a 2019 iMac and I used an external TB drive as the boot drive on that. Never had an issue with it?

Is this something specific to the Macs with apple silicon maybe?

Not sure. Why do you want to boot from an external drive? Can you not just boot from the internal, and have the external as supplemental storage?
 
That's what I used to do, but would often forget to change the default storage locations for things and it got to the point where the internal SSD was so full the iMac would crawl.

If I can't find a solution I might need to reconsider.
 
I know this doesn't help with the 'restarting' issue, however we have several M1 & M2 minis that we use as a small server farm, and boot from external TB drives - none of them sleep either. Not a problem for us tbh given what they do, but we didn't specifically configure them not to sleep as far as I know.

Keep your stuff on the external drive(s), its fast enough. I do the same with my studio as it only has 512GB since i didnt want to pay stupid ott apple prices to upgrade.
2 x 4TB external NVME drives 2800MB/s+ RW!

Can I ask what external enlcose and NVME drives you are using?

No idea what they are doing, I never update to the latest version until there has been a release after the first version. I've had issues with monitor not waking from sleep since my Mac Mini 2012, then Mini M1 now M1 Studio!

I've got a Acasis and Wavlink 40gbps enclosures with SN850X and Addlink 4TB NVMEs. Also have a Sabrent 2TB on USB.

I honestly couldn’t tell you the last time I had a crash. What are you doing with the thing?
 
Same, I literally can’t ever remember having an OS crash. I may have had to do a hard power button push once but that would have been over ten years ago, probably the Mac Pro.
 
I certainly haven't had an OS crash since I got my Mac Studio. Even way back in 2006 when I had the old Xeon Mac Pro I didn't notice any major crashes.
