Hey guys, old server at work may be getting recycled, I can't really turn it on at the moment, but can anyone identify what CPU type/socket this board is and how good it will be as a folding rig if I get a second cpu for it?

Seeing the way the heatsinks are fitted and 2nd photo top left it says Inte(l). So it is an Intel dual Xeon setup. But what socket. Aren't there any other texts on the mobo saying what chipset it features?

Get the HP part numbers from those white stickers with the bar code on them (as many as you can find on the motherboard). Do a Google serach and you'll probably get the motherboard and possibly which HP series it belongs to. Then use that info to find any spec sheets.

Definitely 1366
Worth folding on yes
With the right CPU's you might just make the deadline:

Bigadv is a no-no on 2p LGA 1366 unless you

a:- Have a pair of Hex cores running at 2.66 or better - this is the absolute minimum and given the fluctuations in 8101 tpf i would consider 2.8 a safer limit i.e x5660 or better
b:- Have a pair of quad cores on an SR-2 running at ~3.6.

Please note that the SR-2 is the only board that will allow 2p over clocking, all other boards run at stock + turbo

As for regular SMP tpf.

A pair of E5530's will get you about 33k, A pair of L5640's will get you upto 53k and a pair of x5670's will net you about 70k These are all on linux

DDR3 in banks of 3 per CPU, so you could get away with 6 sticks. Not sure what type of server or motherboard it is but its likeley as its a Xeon system that it would need Registered memory which is a little more expensive.

I'm in two minds now, don't know if I should dish out on this or just save and get a nice Ivybridge system and smash some numbers :O
