Red Arrows and editing

I need some help editing these images, as I am not sure how to get the best out of them. If you guys could edit them and tell me what you have done, that would be superb.

I was in Bournemouth this weekend whilst the Red Arrows were in town, and so I got a few pictures. However... the planes are somewhat dark in comparison to the sky, and I can't seem to get the right combination of nice looking plane and sky.

I don't think there is a huge amount wrong with the original captures, I just can't seem to get it right. Help!

This one looks good with a vertical crop.

Thanks very much, please make a fellow amateur photographer happy!

Had a little play with your 2nd one.

arrows.jpg

Levels, colours & contrast tweaked in PS. Ran it through a noise filter, sharpened & border added.

I use Neat Image for noise, and usually the Unsharp mask in CS8 for sharpening.

When you say levels, colours and contrast tweaked, can you be a little more specific? :)

I have tried playing around for aaaages, and I can't get anywhere near that result!

By the way I have paint shop pro 8, but it has the same levels functions etc. as photoshop.

Any help would be immensely appreciated

Tried using my GD skills and paint

:p

Then using auto levels, crop, sharpen and alien skin image doctor jpeg repair in CS2. Oh and a border. It only took 5 minutes mind.

What i did

1. Slightly rotated cavas and cropped to re-align horizon
2. removed lens flare using spot healing tool
3. Used levels and darkened image slightly
4. Increased saturation by 10
5. Used shadow/highlight feature in PS and added +5% shadow and +10% Highlights
6. Sharpened image and run it though neat image

Had a play with the last one too, gone for a little bit of a 'painted' look;

When I said tweaked, it's exactly that. Just playing with the sliders until it looks good. I also had a little play with the curves which I forgot about. I don't know about PSP because I can't stand it! :D

Cybermyk - I'm liking the l33t GD illustration skills :)

While Cybermyk and Broksta have produced nice images, the red of the arrows has been lost at the expense of an awesome looking sky. This is the same problem that I have been having.

Bri seems to have the technique, the planes are still red without the sky suffering.

Is it because in the other images the planes are just too small?

What makes it annoying is that the images looked perfect on the Fuji S5500's lcd screen, so I didn't know that I was underexposing the planes :(

It was a lot easier to get a tighter crop on the 1st one I did, I think you're right that the planes are too small on the others to really be able to bring out any detail on them.

What we could do is set the levels as per Bri's version to bring out the aircraft. Then save that. Do it again with a Sky enhancement and do and undo history on the planes. Worth a shot.

I'm thinking that the problem really is that the planes are too wickle :(.

Playing around with the colour balance helps, but then the sky goes a bit funny, can't seem to get it quite right.

Perhaps I should just stop complaining! :)
