Red CPU Light - is the 8 pin CPU power required?

Hi guys I got myself a new MSI mortar motherboard with Horizen 3600

When I turned the system on it shows a red light on the CPU light on the board. I am using an old PSU like 12 years plus and I can't seem to connect to the CPU 8 pin onboard because the connectors just don't fit

I have read online that the 8 extra power pins are not required but I am unsure because the mobo motherboard suggests it is needed.

so what could I be doing wrong here? I will try to reset cmos shortly and I am also trying to upgrade the BIOS but failed so far when I put the .rom file on USB and press the usb flash button the light just turns red and then it goes off.

I think with a Ryzen 3xxx you'll be needing the 8 pin plugged in, especially if your manual says it does!

PSUs tend to not last very much longer than 10 years in my experience if they've had average use, therefore you're likely at a good stage to be replacing it anyway.

thanks I have tirelessly tried everything else but nothing worked so far
I have ordered an adapter but got to wait till it arrives.

so frustrating just hope it fixes the issue. but didn't help me understand why the bios would not update

so i managed to get a post via using old 4 pin connector only!

im reading online that 8 pins will probably be needed for overclocking etc.

I'd strongly advise investing in a decent PSU. I've never seen one outside a cheap prebuilt without an 8 pin CPU connector. If it's 12 years old it's definitely due for replacement. You do not want it going pop and taking your shiny new mobo and CPU with it.
