hi i am thinking of a career change and am interested in getting Linux(Unix) certified I have some basics experince with desktop Linux over the last few years nothing fancy but I am a keen/fast learner (fedora/ubuntu/debian/mandrake-mandriva)

how much of a task is this? is this the a good route into a IT career? Cost

I started an HND in software Engineering ( in the evenings) in 2001 but was only able to complete the 1st year due to life commitments which i got distinctions for the four modules and have dipped my toes into c++/java coding but feel this wouldn't be the best way to earn a crust.

So has anyone done this, whats it like to do how long does it take? or is there a better route.

Many of the sales guys (non-technical) at my previous work place had RHCE and CCNA qualifications. The company sent them on boot camps which last a 2 or 3 days perhaps with a little self study before hand. I would say a CCNA and RHCE would be a good route into an entry Linux support role (£25k-38k). Typical career progression would be Senior Admin (£40-50k) then Architect (£65k+).

*Typical rates seen in London. Could be £5-10k less elsewhere.
