I am going on a red letter day Motor Racing Experience in april at silverstone and get to drive a single-seater racing car. Anyone out there done it and if so what can I expect.

Lots of theory (well saying lots a considerable amount of time more than driving) and very very little driving. Spend most of your time learning the best lines and then having a couple of laps. Quite a cool experience but not great value for money (I did the rally one at brands).

I've done a virgin day at Thruxton. Same kind of idea.

I had 4 laps in an RX8 being shown the best lines. The I drove 4 laps in it praticing these with the instructor sitting next to me.

Then I drove 6 laps in a single seater and then had a lap in an RX8 as a passenger as the bloke ragged the guts out of it around the track slamming from side to side.

Was an alright day.

Also before that I watched a short film explaining what would happen through outbthe day and basicly showing what else was on offer if you felt like spending more money.

I'm doing one of the Virgin ones at somepoint, had my heart set on the Ferrari one but the Single Seater could be interesting :)

You do mean the company Virgin and not the other type. Got some strange results when I put it into the search engine ;) :p

My girlfriend did a rally day, was pretty poor really. She got 3 laps, then had to hand the car over, we sat around for a couple of hours then she got 3 more laps followed by a passenger ride and that was it.

Her first 3 laps were pretty poor, real girly style driving so I told her to drive "properly" on the 2nd go. She took my advice and snapped a driveshaft, good girl :D :D :D

A lot of these are a real ripoff, hardly any laps and mis-named cars (Boxsters instead of 911s being the typical one). I'm doing a Formula Ford one shortly which consists of a tutorial, about 17laps in an MG with the instructor, 22 laps in the single seater behind a pace car (split into chunks for tutoring in-betwee), then another 8 laps on my own.. whole thing is about 4.5 hours long.

ive done the single seater thing.

you go out for 10-15 laps in a TT first. on the first 5 an instructor gives you instruction on how you should approach and take corners and advise you on lines. he gives you a score

after than he asks you to drive unadvised, he scores you again.

they have this rule about "not over 4krpm" but its a discretionary thing the instructors have, he was more than happy for me to exceed that and do pretty much as i wished (had had a TT the summer before so was more than familiar with it). wouldnt mind showing my score sheet infact.

you have to score over 80% to drive the single seater (which i did, by miles) you get some simple instruction on that... then get to take it out. really is a laugh. you get timed in those and get a sheet at the end.

i got the fastest time of the session, got the sheets too. :D

i did the full week course at C Don many years ago plenty of laps in that, plenty expensive though got my comp license and got it well filled in with races then got the national license

let it go now though to old good fun at the time though

50 quid says that is at 3 sisters circuit at wigan :)

sounds like the driver training day to me, I did the racing scholarship one, total hoot, but should have done that one first

If you want the Brands Hatch Group one (Brands, Silverstone etc) don't buy it from Red Letter Days, just book it straight through them, it's much cheaper.
I got my red letter day as a xmas gift

Then you owe me 50 quid.

Actually, you don't :) Did you enjoy it? Really looking forward to it, present from my family.

Where did she do this rally day? as it sounds familure lol

I did the single seater at Rockingham with Red Letter Days, it was a great day, but I'd say it's not that good for value for money, as we were in packs of 3 following a pace car, once you got up to 4th gear, you were pretty much in that for all the laps of the oval that I did.

yes, although I got far less time on the track then you will. I got something like, 2 lap track introduction as a passenger, 4 laps 1 to 1, 10 lap pace car, then 2 sets of 8 laps flat out ... was awesome fun, but be careful, some of the formula fords have SHOCKING gearboxes, and they put you on a 5k rpm rev limit, which when you mis a shift and hit 6400 rpm like I did, you get a telling off :o

aaahhh not the same one then.. i took the ex on one couple yrs back.. did the same thing.. most of it was standing on a dirt hill watching her trying to drive a rally car for a few laps.. then others jumped in and we stood for ages..

i had to pay extra for the "pro" to take me around the tack.. what a waste.. he tried to scare me.. but it didnt really feel that fast.. lol "and this is how you do a U-turn" nah mate its just a hand brake turn.. lol must have thought i was some fool.. :P

the garage where they prepare the cars tho was really good :D
