On the way to Norwich today I think I may have set off a red light camera.

The scene; Crossroads in Elveden near Mildenhall in the pouring rain with me approaching doing 30-40 and the light for me is green and I lift off as I approach and hover over the brake. About 10-20 metres before the lights it turns to amber and I try to stop.

The brakes having carbon pads don't really work when cold, so que me unable to stop before the line and slide over it with my rear wheels just over the white line. The car is still well back from the crossroad though and I pop it into reverse and move back a bit but the car behind drives up to the white line.

I'm pretty sure I was stationary when it finally changed to red, so the camera takes two photos?

My question is what will the outcome be, it was silly of me to try and stop in such a short distance in the wet and will take it on the chin and put it down to experience :(

Neil.

Im pretty sure they only turn on after RED, someone told me they turn on 2 seconds after red, im not sure if thats true though. Google the camera and you'll find out all you need to know

Having a hunt about it seems I will get a NIP. I'll go to court and state I didn't drive through the red and didn't impede the traffic crossing infront as my car was still a good 15M+ from the cars crossing.

One flashed me last year and never heard anything from it. I was turning left though, maybe my plate wasn't in the photo:confused:

Did the camera actually go off?

If not then i'd say you are in the clear. There is an induction loop in the road ahead of the line and if you cross that you are nicked.

You can see it as a rectangle cut into the road with the lines defined as tar strips.

Unfortunately the chance of film being in red light cameras is very very high as running a red is considerably more dangerous than speeding.

As for arguing it in court - sorry mate - you'll lose. If your bumper sticks over the line you have technically run the run believe it or not. I remember a case where someone was nicked for exactly this by a copper crossing the road at the same lights.

They dont care about your reasoning - they just care about the rules and I believe it will be open and shut.

And yes, I have a TS10 myself, so I feel your pain if you have been flashed.

All the best mate.

Didn't see a flash.

Will have a look through the Pepipoo website and see if there are any similar cases.

If they do get you it will be for contravening the white line I think. Best to check but if you did not go over the second loop then you might just be ok. Usually (in Scotland) a police officer reviews the pictures and only issues a nip for relevant offences.

He/she might just be clued up enough to spot the car was stationary on the second pic and not causing a problem/hazard to other traffic using the junction.

A pupil I had took so long to move off turning left at a traffic light in Edinburgh that the camera went off as he was halfway around the turn lol Had to call lothian and Borders traffic to expain the circumstances above and was told the above info. They were very pleasant on the phone. Never heard any more about it :D Pupil was sweating for a week!!!

You can always hope.

Neil.

Stopping distance at 30mph by the highway code is 23 metres. When the lights turn amber your not supposed to try an emergency stop 'just' to avoid being on the crossing at red. Amber is a warning that the lights will soon turn red, and you should stop if it's safe to.

Honestly you should have just driven through. Its perfectly legal to go through amber, and at 10-20 meters from the light you were already past the point on no return to be honest. If you cant stop by the line, your already committed, and your legally permitted to cross the junction @ amber.

Red light camera's are normally programmed with this in mind, so even if it turns red just as you cross the line you are safe, and have not broken any laws.

Sounds like your brakes aren't really suited to road use if they are so inneffective when cold. So by the same token you'd have been unable to stop in a hurry if someone ran out into the road?
