Hi all,

Looking for a bit of advice I was going along minding my own business going about 35 in a 40, and the traffic lights turned to Amber when I was about 5-10 meters away - I passed through the junction. In doing so I noticed a red light camera, I didn't see a flash.

Am I right in thinking that these cameras only flash or send a NIP if a car/bike crosses the white line only when the lights are red - because the sensors are activated?

Would I be pretty safe, or would I be looking at a NIP?
As said before the light was on Amber when I went through it, and just changed from green.

As above. It's red plus about a second or two. You have to be able to stop in the thinking plus breaking distance of the Highway Code which is well out on modern cars from when it goes Amber. Plus a bit more.

TLDR.. You will be fine :)

an old workmate got done by one and I think I remember his saying he found somewhere stating they're only active after 2 seconds after it going red. At which point he lost all sympathy with his workmates...

Legally, if you've crossed the line before the light has turned red you're clear. But, could you be done with driving without due care if it's somehow shown you're oblivious of the lights? Dunno how it could be proven tho.

You will be fine. 15 meters per second give or take at that speed. They become active a second after the lights turn red as far as I'm aware. You're also normally ok if you stop over the line on orange providing the car is stationary a second after the lights gone red - quite common in heavy traffic.

You get a couple of seconds, which is to allow people already on the junction to clear.

As for stopping over the line, your ok as long as you don't move again while it's red. Most of them use pressure pads under the road AFAIK. So if your already touching it when it activates your ok as long as you don't move off it. Assuming your not inside a box junction :P

Even in the daylight I see them flash, so I would have thought you'd have seen a flash too. If you went through the light while it was still amber, you'll be ok mate :)

Twice i've been hit by Red light cameras when going through as it turns red. There are some newer ones, which you may not be able to tell, which are much more responsive.

Had a friend working as an installer, apparently its less than a second after the light is red, closer to half a second. Even the new little ones can be seen in broad daylight, have seen one trigger on the opposite direction from about 60 feet away on a bright morning with the sun almost in my eyes so they're bright.
