Red Orchestra £2.99 at steam, 66% off

I was a huge fan when it was first released but the community has dwindled...

More of an NA scene atm.

I have a friend that swears by it, although I found it extremely slow. Saying that, I came from a Quake background, so any game with a lack of bunny hops and circle strafing feels slow and cumbersome :p

Its definatly worth getting at £2.99, ill have to reinstall and see if anyone still plays it myself. As said above, there tends to be more american servers rather than UK which is a shame but theres a few uk and europe servers which you can get a good game on.

Meh was a interesting concept but the game was so slow moving. Just about any map with a bit of range everyone dove for the sniper class (which always seemed to be limited to 2) parked themselves prone in a spot and started picking people of left and right.

The most fun I had involved using teamspeak and two people in the same tank. Some quite hectic moments as one of you drove it and the other aimed the cannon :)

I used to play this a lot when the game was a mod on UT2003/04

Back then the community was great, everyone knew each other, most were fairly mature decent people. You could go onto a public server at night and get a brilliant team game with proper communication and you would have lots of fun.

The slow pace was a change from lots of other games, and the free- aim and one shot kill made it a challenge to pick up, but was far more rewarding for it.

They even had a very well run tournament under ROladder, which I think no longer exists, and unfortunately neither does the rest of the community since the game went retail with Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45.

Something happened with the retail version, don't know what exactly, some people weren't happy with some of the changes and new maps, tweaks here and there. But mostly I think a lot of folks didn't like the great unwashed masses ruining their little club, and they went off to play some other ultra-realistic niche game. OFP mods were popular for example.

It's still a great game, and would recommend it to anyone. For 3 pounds you can't really go wrong. Its just a shame that the once great community that was built around it and gave it so much support has died.

Its awsome if you can get on a server with 50 people online

But dont even think about playing it in the same way as you would DoD or CSS :p

Tempted by it, but are there many decent servers still out there? I have voice comms and love teamwork in games, slow paced is fine by me, I have always liked playing the tank drivers.

If there are enough servers to at least get a game at any point in the day, i'll get it. :)

edit: got it. :O

here are norammly n2 or 3 servers of 50 IME.

Could be different for you lot though, i dont know

You would be crazy not to buy the game at this price. It's one of the best online FPS games ever made in my opinion.

The community is still strong, despite what some might say. Only the fools who felt they sold out have left, but the game is better off without them anyway.

The game itself continues to go from strength to strength with decent patches and free updates. Can't wait to see what they are doing with the UE3 engine.

I bought this june 2008/7 iirc when it was on offer. Fired it up and thought it was rubbish. I was playing cod4 at the time, and thought it was unbelievably slow and sluggish in comparison. Didn't touch it then for months and months.

I am so glad I did. I think i've had more fun playing that game alone than any other game. Its bloody brilliant, ecspecially if you have a soft spot for ww2 era games. Honestly, thats probably the best £2.99 any of you could spend this week.

It takes a couple of hours to get used to the slower pace of the game I reckon. And don't play any fast paced first person shooters before playing it. I can't stress how satisfying it is getting kills in that game. When your on a good server (which I have always found very easy?), on a good map, you can get immersed in Red Orchestra.

Theres a very good modification for the game called Darkest Hour which concentrates on the Western Front, and as such replaces Ivan with US and British soldiers. There are some very good maps on that mod, and i'd say it actually plays slighty different.

I've mentioned the slower pace of the game, compared to say Cod4, as if it were a bad thing. The slower pace and sluggishness isn't really there though. You forget about it after a couple of hours and realise you were just used to other games where you can run across massive maps stupidly fast. I can't believe I used to play Cod4 so much, and think it was somewhat realistic, and not the arcade frag fest that it actually is.

Anyway, buy it, play it and I will personally give anyone a refund* who after a couple of hours of solid play doesn't deem it suitable for thier top 5 FPS's of all time.

Borgia

*just kidding. just trying to excentuate the fact that it is a brilliant and overlooked game.
