Met my match with one of these on the way to work!

It was behind me from where I live, not particularly up my bum or anything, one of them nasty bogey-green colour affairs.

Got to the dual carriageway, when the two lanes open I pull up to 70 (on the inside lane) and this thing absolutely SCREAMS past me, acceleration I didn't think I'd ever see from one of those!
From being behind me, he must have been going at least a tonne just a few car lengths ahead of me, absolutely blitzed it up the bypass :D

All I saw was a stuck on 'turbo' badge, so I assume is was a red top conversion.

At least all you Corsa owners can sit there all smug, knowing that when you do hit it big, instead of having to give up your beloved you can just beef it up with one of these!

Wow.

Wait, you are saying that this is the first time you've met your match in a rover 420 diesel?

WTF kind of empty-ass roads do you usually drive on?

I should have thought you meet your match every time somebody pulls up beside you at the lights in anything more potent than a Vectra DTI?

I was outside working on the SAAB the other night when I heard a loud car bumbling down the road. I looked up and it was a NOVA that looked like it had a brand new paint job, rollcage and a few gaps up front showing the radiator. Then it turned left and disappeared in an awesome noise of "BWAAAH TISH BWAH" *gone*. Turns out that the radiator was actually massive intercooler and it had a turbo in there somewhere. I was impressed that A) it wasn't sheddy looking and B) Hot damn it shifted wuicker than anything I've ever seen!

It's not difficult to get any chassis to move quickly with the right engine and gearbox in there and I admire anyonw who has a go but theres more reward in getting the most of of the stock or similar engine I feel.

Maybe met my match was the wrong term :p

Just shocked me how quick it was, I don't go round hooning everywhere and I was only pulling up from 50ish and was in 5th gear at the time, so wasn't going anywhere quick, but he absolutely screammmed past.

And cyclists killed from smog today stands at about 4, one was still twitching on the ground so don't know if that counts. If so that's 5 :p

Smoke is an issue at the moment, the car does shift when you beef it (best mate has a 1.8 Focus and left that far, far behind on a dual carriageway) but does so in a horrible, chokey black fashion.

That's why the Vi is coming soon!

I still drive a Corsa B and it's still a fun car. Just a terrible stigma which I really am trying to get away from. But it's been so good (well, reliable) that I can't think of much to replace it on the cheap lol.

Redtops and LETS are immense fun, the latter being pretty extreme in such a car but a straight line warrior!

I will be the first to admit you need pile loads of money into chassis/suspension mods for a Corsa to handle though! It's just a shame they're a kids car. I've driven loads of motors and still like driving my Corsa afterwards...

I drive a 1.6 Sport with some mods, toying with getting more power as I can't choose a new car!

The Corsa is the replacement for the Nova, ones that age will always have that stigma. The newer ones don't yet though.

Depends how much run-up space you have before the roundabout :)

Whats the performance stats for the Vi?

Don't know if you saw the thread, lol there isn't that much of a run up so did well to get my speed. Shame the brakes didn't agree!

For the Vi, the 0-60 is 7.5 seconds (some dispute this figure and place it at around 7-7.2), 143bhp into 1060kg so should go well. 174nM torque, so all revs really.

I will be stripping the engine down, redoing the headgasket and pump etc, and may do a solid cam conversion and a few other bits to aim towards 180bhp while I'm in there. Depends on when I get my act together and get the car - if I find a decent one soon I'll just do the head work, keep it standard then do the conversion later on. If it's in a few months when cash is more free flowing I'll be doing it before it goes on the road :)

It's still a K series though, so is liable to blow up at any time :o

Is it not perhaps time to try something that isn't a Rover?

Brand loyalty is one thing, but surely there is something better out there.

Recommend something then :) tbh I'm not too stuck to them, just not had many problems. I'm too picky when it comes to cars :(

Quick, insurable (Vi is group 14 and is the top end of what I can do), I'm open to any brands. I looked at something with a Volvo T4 or T5 lump, don't know what these are like in reliability terms though. 0-60 in less than 8 seconds, but with economy of over 35mpg would be preferable :)

This is my daily drive, around 280bhp, 6 speed gearbox (which is on its last legs) anyway not a lot thats quicker in a straight line.
