When in Spain i picked up some Vermouth which upped my Martini game compared to the Martini Vermouth i usually use over here.

My parents have come home for Christmas and i asked if they could grab me some of the same stuff. However yesterday my dad handed me a bottle of this Red Vermouth

Having never drank it before, i'm now wondering what i should be using it for to avoid it having a fate of being stuck in a cupboard unopened for the next 10 years.

Have got some gin already, so that's certainly an option. Thanks

I have a reasonable selection of booze (Rum, vodka, whisky, tequila, cachaca), what i don't have too much of is the side elements required for most cocktails i suppose like bitters/Campari etc. It'd be good if you could buy them in slightly smaller bottles 50CL for example.

Negroni all the way. Or if you're a whiskey drinker you could opt for a Boulevardier which is essentially a Negroni but with whisky instead of the gin. You can also do an Americano which is the same but no gin/whisky (a bit safer for more than one :p)

Awesome, i saw you mention that Boulevardier in the cheap whisky thread and it's not something i'd heard of. However i'm now thinking that i need some cheap Whisky to stick in it rather than using anything decent. I was also thinking a Manhatten which requires me buying some Bourbon.

I feel like this is going to be one of those situations where my wife rolls her eyes because i end up spending £100 on various bottles to avoid wasting a £15 gift :D

Manhattans are a good use!

You can mix up the base spirit to change the drink.

Also, vermouth and tonic is pretty nice. But certainly more of a summer drink.

Yeah good shout. To save you from trawling the whisky threads just get Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve or Bulleit. Whatever's cheaper, they'll be fine for mixing. I always have one in rotation.

I'm determined to one-up everyone from the Negroni, by suggesting the Boulevardier :p

heh bear in mind Negroni's are lethal!
I've learnt the hard way. I went to Barcelona for work once on a Friday. They wanted me to come back same evening but I made the very valid point that flying on a Friday evening was more expensive than a hotel room and a flight home Saturday evening. So I got a nice Friday night in Barcelona for free. Went to a trendy tapas bar, nice negroni to start... ooh I'll have another with my first round of food. Glass of wine with the rest... Oh I'll have another glass of wine for dessert... Long story short the next thing I remember was waking up in my room with the TV on at about 4am. Slightly concerned about how I got back.. but nevermind. It's not good drinking too much in a foreign country on your own kids!

A good rule for negronis is to stick with one at the absolute most. It'll only end up in tears :p

Hmmm, not sure a Negroni is for me! It got better once the ice had melted and diluted it a little. Although i'm sure i could be called a heathen for that feedback!

It reminded me of a non alcoholic drink that was being handed out at an Italian food festival called Crodino. Seems to be a non alcohol version of Campari from what i can tell. Will switch to a Manhatten tonight. Just need to pick up some Bitters as Tesco were out.
