Afternoon folks

Currently working my way through a batch of The Hedonist. A Shiraz I find quite enjoyable.

I'm looking to buy something "similar" around the £5-6 mark.

I'd be happy with a malbec too.

Cheers!

Not much of a wine drinker, but I like, and few in my family like a red wine called Porcupine Ridge which is a Shiraz, can get it in Sainsbury's, but I believe its around £7-8 a bottle.

Inflation hasn't entirely ruined this price point yet. Sainsbury's Carta Roja Gran Reserva is £5-6 and is as bland as it is drinkable. Very aged so you need to like oak. Tesco have a nice Malbec at £6 also.

Personally in that kind of price range I like Southern Australian wines - Banrock Station, Jacob's Creek, Wolfblass, etc. Barossa Valley wines in general. Nothing particularly remarkable at that price but reasonably balanced and smooth to drink.

Do your palate a favour and up your budget. Look at Asda's Faustino wines, for example.

I have to say at this kind of price range the quality seems to have gone downhill the last few years - all too many taste like flavoured vinegar - before there were plenty that had reasonable deep flavour even at £5.

I quite enjoy the Carta Roja it's my Sunday afternoon standby wine happy to drink it after it's breathed and happy to cook with it. It's not special but as you say very drinkable. Normally buy 20 odd bottles when there's an offer on and stick them under the stairs. I don't feel precious about banging 1/3 of a bottle in a sauce or a decent glug to deglaze the roast tin.
