I have recently started playing Redalert 1 over LAN against my dad. I still think this is the best strategy game ever made. Its easy, reasonably well balanced and fun.

Sure Starcraft is excellent but it often takes more time to finish a game and its a LOT more complicated. With Redalert (origional, 2 has new pointless fancy units and stupid superpowers) you can build a few structors, take over some ore fields and create a mass army of jets, mammoths, apaches etc. Also some strategic things like tanya, naval attacks...

Easy and fun. If anyone else wants to play LAN Redalert 1 then theres loads of stuff on the net, this site has a lot of stuff listed and help http://www.gametalk.com/talk/pc/command_conquer_red_alert/talk-reply.cgi?id=52672178&fid=g_pcgbbn

But i recommend simply doing this -

(Windows XP Service pack 2)
Install the game from origional cd using win95 compatibility mode
Do not select to restart
Go here http://www.understorm.net/cnc/lan/cnc95_ra1.php/ download the 1.01 final
Extract and copy over the file in the redalert directory, mine is C:\WESTWOOD\REDALERT.

Then go into your network properties
Install - Protocol - IPX - Properties
Set Internal network number on one computer to 10000000
Frame type 802.2
Network number 10000000

Next computer to
00000001
802.2
00000001

Next computer to
00000002
802.2
00000002

Run redalert with CD in or mounted on daemon, alcohol or whatever. You get full working audio and videos. Go to Multiplayer - LAN game and create on one pc and join with another. Use hamache for internet game over LAN.

If you get a timeout error like i did when i had a game you can increase the NWLink IPX timeout from 15minutes to 240mins using command prompt. Unfortunatly i have forgot what i typed and the webpage but i searched for something like NWLink IPX timeout

you should try moomans rules i think it was called....there was a few custom maps for it aswell.
me and my bro used to play........its co-op and you both get to control the same team ...one of you can concentrate on defense and the other on offense.

I spent quite some time playing this online, Caseys ladder and the official board. Never quite won those prizes that were up for grabs. I seem to remember a CD-ROM drive as top prize once which I really wanted.

Think this is a mod for Redalert 2, not 1

Problem is, it seems to have 56k ping even over a 100mbit LAN. Annoying :(

I used the 3.03 patch after installing Counterstrike and Aftermath.

Seems to play fast enough on mine.

I did try to upgrade to 3.03 doing the following as instructed here -
http://www.freewebs.com/thetardis/raxp.htm

but then it wouldnt allow me to join a created network game, i could see it but not join it. More hassle than its worth really, works fine at the moment so i wont mess with version 1.04 (off origional cd i have) and the 1.01 lan patch

Ah, didn't know there was a patch to fix the LAN problem.

In terms of impact in its time this must be the greatest RTS ever.

I dunno, it certainly brought RTS games to the masses but I think Starcraft gets that title due to its incredible contribution to professional gaming and that it's still by far the most popular RTS game a decade after its release.
