Redownloading purchased songs

I had a reformat this week and it never really occured to me to back up anything from itunes as i assumed I'd just be able to log back in and re download my purchases again, however it seems that this is not the case, do you have to buy again or am i doing something wrong?

No, you need to back them up. However, they offer a one time redownload of everything you purchased (last time I checked). Think you just need to email (the details should be in itunes or on the site).

I'll remember that for the future, luckily I reinstalled onto a new hard drive and have been able to drag the music back from the old drive. I assumed Itunes would work like steam.

I also found that out the hard way, although luckily for me I'd only bought 2 albums from iTunes. I'd advise you to keep the receipt that they mail you.
