Reduce Coil Whine Today!

Its not 1st April yet or has someone had too much Xmas vino ?
:D

Not the best start tbf. :p

The purpose of the thread was to help anyone with a GPU with coil whine reduce it, by running the mentioned tests repeatedly.

I have a RX 580 that had bad coil whine, so left it running Sky Diver graphics scene 1 on a loop overnight. It’s now completely silent.

I had one of OcUK's super-special GTX 970s with the coils glued or whatever it was they were advertising. It still whined (or rather buzzed, as is much more common in my experienced). Buildzoid actually did a video about the cause of coil whine that's fairly interesting:

The TL;DW is that modern cards tend to have more coil whine because the types of inductors that are most prone to causing it are also the ones with the best physical and electrical properties. You can get ones that rarely suffer from it at all, but they're larger and can't handle as much current, so they rarely get used any more. GPUs are also just inherently prone to causing coil whine due to the way that they work electrically.
I think also the fact is that the faster the GPUs are, the more prone they are to whine due to the sheer volume of FPS they put out, that ties in with what Aretak says about about the current drawn.

You don't see too many reports of coil whine on the lower end GPUs.

I've got very bad coil whine coming from either the 3090 or the PSU.

Just ran Night raid and managed to get an almost buzzing sound out of the 3090 which is different to the noise I'm hearing constantly which is a high pitched almost metalic sound, and its there whether I'm at the desktop or playing games.
Do the custom run and set it up on loop and leave it running for 24 hours or at least overnight. See if it helps.

Unfortunately hasn't resolved anything for mine after a night run last night which was painful since it in my bedroom lol. Can't even RMA as not being accepted as has had a waterblock on it so stuck with it now. Tempted to offload and get a 3080/3090 it so bad.

I mean in a stock system in a proper case with panels and it under the desk etc it probably wouldn't be so bad. However this is head height pretty much about 18" from me and right at the front of the build so no way to dampen the sound.
Lol, ouch not great if you have to sleep in the same room.

Run it again, keep running it. It will get better, at least in other games/apps. :)
