i've noticed that when having mapped drives (to a letter), on bootup if the share isnt available, it takes ages to log into windows. and when opening my computer with mapped drives that arent available, it takes a fair few seconds for the window contents to appear.

any way of reducing the timeout windows waits until its flags the drive as not available to something much shorter?

how'd i do that on xp machines? i remember win9x had a quick/full option for reconnecting drives, never did find the win2k/xp version of that.

edit: will they still appear in my computer as a disconnected drive and then reconnect when i double click on it for the first time? if thats the case that sounds ideal, i dont want to faff about remapping the drives everytime though.

if you're mapping them using the wizard, the option is there

untick reconnect at logon
if i untick the box, i'll need to remap when i need to use it, ideally i'd like it to start as disconnected and reconnect when clicked on.
