Reducing volume of active speakers

Hi all. Many a time have I stumbled across these forums while searching various tech queries, and found a lot of useful information, so I thought I'd sign up and see if you can help me with this one.

Today I have hooked up my Sky Q box to my monitor, with the audio going to my (active) speakers with the optical out from the Sky box into the RCA input of the speakers, via a FiiO Taishan DAC. However, the sound is too loud, even when the speakers are set to their lowest volume. There is no way to change the sound output on the Sky box.

Would I be right in thinking something similar to the DAC I have but with a volume control would solve my problem?

Or is there a better way? Something else between the DAC and the speakers? And preferably a solution that's not gonna cost me more than £40 or so...

Any help is most appreciated.
