I am resizing some pictures for photobox

resizing them to 6" x 4.5" (the size for photobox free introductory pics) is reducing the pixels to 424 x 324

is this normal, seems a very very low resolution to me

Well what's the original resolution? The way i crop for Photobox is to use the marquee tool at whatever ratio i want, use that to snap some guides, then crop to those guides. I don't bother making it exactly the size (in inches) that it should be. The more pixels the better, essentially.

the original reso before resizing down to 6"x4.5 was 1600 (and some spare change) x 1400 (and some spare change)

when i upload, there is a crop box around the image, so I have the choice of losing some of the picture, OR shrinking to fit and getting white space on either side.

What do you guys generally do please

I do apologise, for these simple questions, I just want to get the best results that I can with what I have.

Never resize the images for printing. Just upload them to Photobox and let them deal with the resizing, a) they'll do a good job of it and b) you then won't have problems if you want to use the same image for a bigger print.

That's at 72ppi. You want to be around the 200/300 mark.

You're probably adjusting the Document Size rather than adjusting the Resolution. If you change the resolution from 72ppi to somewhere in the 260+ range you'll find the Document Size alters to meet your needs.

d'oh the pix per imch was right there next to the image size in inches

changed that to 300 and it stays nice and big resolution and photobox rates it as full quality

Thanks m8, sometimes its the simplest of things that make the difference

Not sure If you're getting what we're saying, upload at full size, do not resize!
That way you get the best quality picture possible, photobox know what they're doing!

On the photobox website you can decide how you want to crop the images, OR print them in a 4:3 ratio size print (it costs the same).

if i send them to photobox without resizing them then i get a box with in the picture, so i either lose some of the picture or i get white borders, nether of those are prefereble.

Step one: Upload all the photos, as shot, to Photobox.
Step two: Select all, choose 6"x4.5". This ratio is 4:3, and most probably what your photos are.
Step three: Pay.

If you want a different size print, like a 6"x4", add it to your basket. If you are unhappy with the crop previewed, click on the picture and move the crop to taste.

The only way that you can avoid that is by picking a physical photo size which has the same aspect ratio (height:width) as the original image.
